Helping Cats for 30 Years
Our goal is to provide the best care and support to every cat that comes into our care.
OUR JOURNEY
What is Cats Anonymous Rescue and Adoption?
Small Beginnings
The “Cat House” was set up in the spring of 1992 in a small playhouse at the back of my property. Back then, we fostered cats for a humane society that didn’t have a shelter. There were usually only about 10 cats at any given time. As the humane society grew, our little cat house was bursting at the seams. We were close to 30 cats, and very overcrowded. My sister Kassie and I decided it was time for a bigger facility. In the spring of 1996, a group of very dedicated and generous volunteers began the task of renovating my garage to become the new and greatly improved home of our homeless cats. The project was completed in October 1996 and the cats happily moved in.
Venturing Out on Our Own
In the fall of 1999, after long consideration, my sister and I decided that it was time to separate from the Humane Society and become a private shelter. This was a difficult and scary decision, as it meant that financially, we were on our own. But we felt that it was the right thing to do, for the cats and us. Again, with the help of very dedicated people, we raised the money to “adopt” the cats from the Humane Society, and continue on independently. It was a learning experience, but we kept things going and after a lengthy paperwork process we achieved official Canadian charitable status.
Our shelter is usually home to between 35 – 60 cats depending on the time of year. Kitten season (May-Nov) is always busiest. All cats and kittens are blood tested for feline leukemia and feline immune deficiency virus, and are vaccinated, treated for parasites, microchipped and spayed/neutered. All the cats remain in the shelter until they are adopted. There is no time limit on their stay with us. On average we find homes for 150 cats and kittens per year.
Our Facility
Our shelter has grown over the years, from three rooms to six rooms. The largest room is our Main Adoption area, where the majority of the adult cats reside. The cats roam free in this room once they have adjusted to living with the other feline residents.
The second room is our Special Diets room. The cats in this room are on specific diets, either for medical conditions or for weight loss purposes. They are fed individually to ensure they receive the proper diets.
The third room is our Singles Cat room. This room is dedicated to cats that cannot co-exist peacefully with other cats and must be adopted into single cat households. These cats are given free roam of the room for a full day, one at a time, on a rotating basis.
Our fourth room is the Nursery. This room is for our adoptable kittens. Due to the developing immune systems of kittens, we keep them separate from the adult cats for adoption. As you can well imagine, this is a very popular room!
The fifth room is our New Arrivals area. This is where the new cats stay until they are fully vaccinated, dewormed, blood tested, microchipped, spayed &/or neutered and ready for adoption. The cats usually stay in this room for 3 weeks, which gives them time to adjust emotionally to their surroundings, and is an adequate quarantine period for virus control. Once they have had all their medical needs met and space in the main room permits, they are moved to a cage in the main room for a short adjustment period and are then permitted loose once they are ready.
The last room is our Feral Cat Cottage. This building is separate from the shelter, tucked into the trees where it is quiet and private. It is designed to house the feral cats that are part of our TNR program for a short period before and after their surgeries.
Our shelter is primarily volunteer driven. We have only 1 paid staff member thanks to a yearly grant from a generous supporter. We are always in need of more volunteers to help keep the shelter running smoothly. All our money comes from donations, our own fundraising efforts, and online donation platforms. We are so grateful for the support of our community!

Kenneth Schneck
After retiring from a career as an RMT, I was looking for some volunteer work that would involve helping cats.
I have had my own cats much of my life and have always loved being around them. I found Cats Anonymous
online and soon learned that the all volunteer nature of the organization guarantees that everyone here is
participating because they too, really love cats. Every aspect of the work, from hands-on care of the cats,
to grounds maintenance, house cleaning, driving or attending meetings is extremely fulfilling. Cats Anonymous
is the best organization of its kind that I know of.
