About Gunner – A Big Softie with a Bigger Heart
Gunner is a large, handsome tabby who’s lived a life outdoors. After spending years as a tomcat on the streets, he was taken in by a kind barn, and that simple act of kindness changed everything for this big guy. Gunner discovered the joys of indoor life: soft beds, gentle affection, and brushing (which he absolutely loves).
For a cat who had to fend for himself for so long, Gunner is surprisingly affectionate. He enjoys being close and soaking up attention, though he can still get spooked now and then—understandable, considering his rough start. He’s not a fan of mops or brooms (we suspect he’s been shooed away with them in the past), but offer him a brush and you’ll see him melt.
Gunner is now neutered and officially retired from tomcat duties. He’s embracing the quieter, easier life and we think he deserves a home that reflects that. He’s not suited for homes with young children or dogs, but a calm, patient environment would be perfect for him. Although Gunner has accepted the cats in the main adoption room, he is still sometimes intimidated or overwhelmed by them and gets agitated. We feel he will do best in a quiet home with no other pets. Recently, he had a moment of ‘redirected aggression’ – he was startled by one of the other cats who was caterwauling in the shelter, and when he came in to investigate he was very agitated … and bit one of the volunteers … the first thing he saw when he heard the upsetting noises. Since that he has been a little on edge with loud noises and sudden movements, so he will need a cat saavy owner to recognize his moods and help keep him calm.
This big boy has the size of a streetwise survivor but underneath it all, he’s just a gentle soul looking for safety and love. His body is big, but we promise, his heart is even bigger.
